Central Institute of Fisheries Education (CIFE) is the only Deemed University for fisheries in India. The Institute offers education in fisheries science. CIFE was established in 1961. The CIFE was accorded the Deemed University status in 1989 by the University Grants Commission (UGC). CIFE promotes research and development of fisheries and aquaculture both in India and rest of the world.
CIFE offers Masters and PhD programs in specialized branches of fisheries, undertakes cutting edge research, conducts capacity enhancement programs, and provides technical support and consultancy to development agencies, fishers, farmers and entrepreneurs.
The Institute has two campuses one at Yari road and another at Seven Bungalows, Mumbai. The new Yari road campus (three floors and basement) consists of scientific divisions, Academic and Accounts sections, Conference hall, Community hall, Aquarium, Examination and Academic cells, and the like. The old campus at Seven Bungalows consists of three divisions, committee room, auditorium, workshop and museum. These two campuses are a kilometer apart from each other at Versova.
With a team of dedicated scientists and state-of-art infrastructure facilities, CIFE is actively partnering the knowledge led revolution in order to create fisheries and aquaculture based sustainable rural livelihoods and to ensure food and nutritional security for all.
