University Of Mumbai University of Mumbai erstwhile University of Bombay started in 1857 is a historic institution and hence not merely a campus to attend classes but also a site worth seeing. Carrying more than 150 years of history with it, the University of Mumbai offers various programs at undergraduate, postgraduate and research level. Whole range of subjects under humanities, sciences, commerce, engineering, law, medicine, etc are taught. The University also offers various job oriented certificates and diploma programs.

When one study in University of Mumbai, he / she did not only get the certificate or diploma but also gains deeper insight about various social and industrial cultures. This is because Mumbai being the commercial city is the most happening hub of the nation and business capital. Another reason is the University of Mumbai accepts students from all Indian states and union territories as well as foreign nationals. All university departments engage in research works.

The University of Mumbai strives to produce eligible human resources in maximum numbers for the benefit of society and industry. It is also one of the most preferred study destinations in India. To handle the rising admission demand the university has two campuses acquiring 230 acres and 13 acres of land area. The University has 2 postgraduate centers, 354 affiliated colleges, and 36 departments under different faculties. The University of Mumbai has established excellent ties with various industry houses and offers different professional courses according to industrial requirements.

The library of any educational institution is considered heart of it. And the University of Mumbai has magnificent Central Library. Its name is Jawaharlal Nehru Library.  The library holds nearly 1 million copies of books (850,000) documents and Scientific Journals, Thesis, Encyclopedias, along with over 30,000 microfilms and over 1200 rare manuscripts, IMF reports, census records.

The library is automated and has access to hundreds of e journals and periodicals through subscriptions. Besides central library, various university departments have their own library. The technology and applied research journals and books of the University of Mumbai are kept at various other libraries including those at MUICT, TIFR, JBIMS & Tata Memorial Hospital.

All faculties of University of Mumbai engage in research works. The University of Mumbai has received Five Stat status by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). In the past 5 years the demand for admission into University of Mumbai rose 104% among undergraduate students, 112% among postgraduate students and 147% among admission takers in distance learning programs. The University of Mumbai is affiliating body to most of the research institutes situated in Mumbai and surrounding areas.

The University of Mumbai also has shown promise at national and international level. 12 Department / sections of University of Mumbai are recognized under various national programs, like SAP / CAS / DRS /DSA / COSIST / FIST. Every year about 20 teachers from University of Mumbai visits abroad for academic purposes. In past 5 years, 18 National / International awards are won by teachers of the University. Recently, the University has started 10 Self Supporting programs. The University also offers various scholarships to meritorious and needy students.

Being one of the oldest institutions in India for higher education the University of Mumbai has large pool of proud alumni spread across globe.  B. R. Ambedkar, Mahatma Gandhi, Jagdish Bhagwati, Aishwarya Rai, R.A. Mashelkar, Lal Krishna Advani are some of the proud alumni of the University of Mumbai.
